What Dental Problems May Need Urgent Attention?

You may need an emergency dental appointment if you have:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • A broken, cracked or badly chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out or displaced tooth
  • Dental pain following an injury
  • A dental abscess or swelling
  • Bleeding following a dental procedure or injury
  • A lost or broken filling causing pain
  • A loose or damaged crown or bridge
  • Pain or problems associated with a wisdom tooth
  • Severe sensitivity or pain affecting eating or sleeping

These symptoms can have different causes, so an assessment is important to determine the appropriate care.

What Should You Do Before Reaching Us?

Severe Toothache

Keep the area clean and avoid foods or drinks that make the pain worse. You can speak to a pharmacist about suitable pain relief while waiting for dental care.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If a piece of tooth has broken off, keep it in milk or saliva and bring it with you if possible.

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Act quickly. Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it and, if possible, place it back into the socket. If this is not possible, keep it in milk or saliva and seek dental care as soon as possible. Do not put a baby tooth back into the socket.

Dental Swelling

Contact a dentist promptly if you develop significant swelling, particularly if it is accompanied by pain or fever.

What Happens at Your Emergency Appointment?

We will discuss your symptoms, examine your teeth and gums and, where clinically necessary, take an X-ray to help identify the cause of the problem. We will then explain the appropriate treatment and next steps.
