When Should You Contact Us?

Please contact the practice if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • Dental pain after an accident or injury
  • Swelling around a tooth, gum or face
  • A suspected dental abscess
  • Bleeding that does not settle after dental treatment
  • A painful or damaged filling
  • A loose or damaged crown or bridge
  • Wisdom tooth pain or swelling
  • Pain that is affecting your sleep or daily activities

Severe dental pain, swelling, dental trauma and certain problems following treatment may require urgent assessment.

What Can You Do Before Your Appointment?

For Toothache

Keep the affected area clean and avoid anything that triggers the pain. A pharmacist can advise you about suitable pain relief while you wait for your appointment.

For a Broken Tooth

Keep any broken tooth fragment in milk or saliva and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on the affected side until you have been assessed.

If an Adult Tooth Has Been Knocked Out

Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If possible, gently place it back into the socket. If you cannot do this, place it in milk or saliva and seek dental attention immediately. Never reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.

If You Have Swelling

Contact the practice promptly. Do not ignore increasing swelling, particularly when accompanied by pain or fever.

What Happens During an Emergency Appointment?

Your dentist will first assess the problem and discuss your symptoms. An examination and X-ray may be recommended when clinically necessary to help identify the cause of your pain or injury.

Once the problem has been assessed, we will explain your treatment options and the next steps.
