Root canal treatment removes damaged or infected pulp from inside a tooth; the space is then cleaned, shaped and filled to help retain the tooth.
The pulp inside a tooth contains nerves and blood vessels. When it has been affected by decay, trauma, cracks or another dental problem, root canal treatment may be used to remove the damaged or infected pulp. The space is then cleaned, shaped and filled to help retain the tooth where appropriate.
Incisors, premolars and molars can have different root and canal configurations, so your dentist at GreenTree Dental & Implant Clinic will assess the individual tooth before discussing whether root canal treatment may be suitable.
A tooth may need assessment for root canal treatment if you notice:
In some cases, a tooth requiring root canal treatment may show no obvious symptoms and is only identified during a routine examination or X-ray.
Because the number and shape of root canals vary by tooth, we offer treatment tailored to the tooth involved:
Treatment is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and may be completed over one or more appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth. Your dentist will clean and shape the canals before sealing them, and the tooth will usually need a further restoration, such as a filling or crown, to protect it afterwards.
Some sensitivity around the tooth is common for a short period following treatment. Your dentist will advise on any aftercare needed and discuss the long-term restoration of the tooth to help support its function.
If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been advised you may need root canal treatment, contact GreenTree Dental & Implant Clinic to arrange an assessment.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during treatment. Some mild sensitivity around the tooth afterwards is common and usually settles within a few days.
This depends on the complexity of the tooth and its root canal anatomy. Some teeth can be treated in a single visit, while others, particularly molars, may need more than one appointment.
A tooth that has had root canal treatment usually needs a further restoration, such as a filling or crown, to protect it and restore its function for everyday use.
